Photographing Food

Making food photos look tasty can be difficult.  Most of the problem stems from lighting issues.
Too little light
Too little light creates a yellowish green tint to the photos.  Who is tempted by green food that isn't intended to be green?  Green Eggs and Ham anyone?
Flash
Using a flash washes out the color and casts odd shadows.

The best lighting comes from natural sunlight.  Often, my best food pictures are taken with the plate setting on a windowsill...or on the side steps of our home.
Winter food photos are the most challenging.  Ohio winters are dreary and the sun has set by dinner time.
Google
Pam suggested a work light for indoor winter photography.  Brilliant!  I purchased mine at Home Depot for about $50.  It definitely help with the winter lighting issues.

MAKE IT A GREAT DAY!

  7. Hello La,
yes, I know those problems from tablescaping. But I got last year two daylight lamps. They make real true light for inside. And the bulbs fit into normal lampholders. The working lights are also very nice.
    Best greetings, Johanna

  8. As you might can tell from my blog..I absolutely LOVE taking photos of my foods. I never dreamed I would but once I started blogging, I found more challenge in taking photos of food than flowers and such.
Natural, outdoor lighting is, by far the best.
Meats can REALLY be tricky..if it's not done just right, it can make you sick to look at it.:)) On the other hand, fruits of any kind are amazing to photograph.

  9. Who knew blogging would involve so much photography. I love when the weather is warmer and I can drag my stuff outside. I guess that doesn't work with a stove though.

  10. La, I have my fingers crossed that Blogger will allow my comment to go through as I've been having trouble on your blog.

Now I know what to get my husband for Father's day! A nice "work light"..and of course he won't mind if I borrow it now and then :)

  11. Yay! It worked! The trick is to uncheck the "stay signed in" on the Blogger sign in page.

  12. I know not to use a flash so a tripod is a necessity indoors!!

  13. What a great idea. Your pics look really good in the collage. I just had that issue when I was trying to take a picture of my triple berry pie. It was only like 9:00 in the morning and the kitchen in our house is dark that time of day. This is FL after all and house does not have as many windows for natural light or we might all cook inside! lol Have a great weekend.

  17. Hi!
Beautiful your photos, I also enjoy photographing food, it is difficult to adjust to light, but I agree with you, the natural light of day is best.

  18. I think food is always hard to photograph. And not because I'm nibbling on it...although...

  19. I agree, it is the lighting. It has taken me years, and there's always room for improvement!

  20. Great suggestion about the HD work light. It's always a struggle because the light changes here from minute to minute.
