Wopat Auction: Day 2

As promised, here are a few of the other things I found this weekend at the Wopat Auction and Goodwill.

First, I found this pitcher and bowl at Goodwill for $3.00. I think it will come in handy this fall…

Goodwill also had this wooden tray for $2.00. Maybe I’ll actually organize my kitchen table, which currently serves as a dropping off point for everyone. I think I'm expecting a lot for only $2.00!

Finally, I found this sweet set of vintage china. There are only a few pieces, but I thought it was pretty and I was mainly interested in the small platter.

The entire set was $5.00.

On to the auction for Day 2 (read about Day 1 HERE):

A note about auctions: sometimes the auctioneer throws a couple of items together to sweeten the pot. More times than not, I’m only interested in one of the items. Other times, it works out nicely.

This French pitcher, pink (yes, it is actually pink) candy dish, and marble bowl went for only $5.00 for all three. I seem to have a new found love for pitchers, especially French ones. Not sure what I will do with the bowl, but I do like the candy dish.

I fell for this hand-painted German teacup and saucer. It is so dainty and artist was very talented.

The auctioneer added this unique Japanese teacup and saucer and I was able to get both for $10.00.

I like the little feet on the teacup.

I bought this serving set for $5.00. I think it will be perfect for serving shrimp and cocktail sauce during the holidays. The base is silver. I used silver polishing cream twice and it is still quite tarnished. I think I’m going to have to work on it a while.

I liked this floor lamp for my bedroom.
The auctioneer included this second
one in for one money: $5.00!

I promised Debbie I would spotlight the table linens, but I don't want to wear you our. I will show those to you in a day or two when it is sunny and I can get some good shots.

I’m linking this post to Linda’s Nifty Thrifty Tuesday’s. Stop over and see what everyone is up to.

Wopat Auction

Just a quick post today to show you a sampling of what I found at a Two-day auction this weekend. The family was quite wealthy, leaving $16 million to set up a foundation to benefit our community. They must have entertained quite a bit because there were several sets of china, crystal, and linens.

50 glass plates for $9.00

18 individual iron serving pots, 6 with lids $5.00
A banana box full of silver
and pewter platters $10.00

I also picked up two dozen Maxfli golf balls and a gun rack, for Jordan, for $15.00 total. Two floor lamps were mine for $5.00 total. Sixteen dollars bought me two banana boxes of table linens! There are a few other odds and ends that I will share with you later.

For dinner this evening, I made French Onion Soup and served it in the iron pots with homemade croutons and melted cheese. Salads accompanied the soup and were served on the new glass plates, chilled.

I hope you are all having a wonderful weekend.

Thrifting Addiction

HELP! Call Dr. Drew, call Dr. Phil...I am addicted to thrifting.

More and more I find myself refusing to pay what department stores want for items I like. My first thought is, "I'll bet I can find something similar at an auction, yard sale, or thrift shop". So far, I have been lucky enough to find similar items.

This week, I found:

A mirror at a consignment shop $5.00

A pewter mirrored sconce $4.10

A wire stand at auction $2.00

The watering can I used in my
Bathroom Makeover $.99 at Goodwill

A pillow for my upcoming bedroom makeover
at a garage sale for $2.00

This corner shelving unit for $20
at a consignment shop. It needs some
paint, but it is perfect for my sun room.

Not a bad week's work.

Elephant Cup

Hello Friends!

If you've never been to an auction, sometimes they auction an entire box of items for one price. You end up getting the item that caught your eye, but also some things you may or may not like.

This elephant cup was in a box I won at an auction this weekend. After I won, the auctioneer told me I got a really good buy because of the little cup.

There's no date on it so I have no idea how old it is. All I know is that it was made in Japan. Do any of you know what era this may be from? Any input you give would be much appreciated.

Great Finds at Centerberg Auction

As I told you after my first auction, I think going to auctions is now in my blood. Yesterday's auction was in a very Mayberry-ish little town in central Ohio. When my Google directions didn't lead me to the right location, I stopped to ask directions.

I found two older gentlemen (Barney and Otis) sitting outside the Post Office, of course I did. I asked them where to find the street I was looking for and they chimed in. "Are you here for THE auction?"

The entire town, except
Barney and Otis, must have turned out for this Event of the Season as it was very crowded. The auction was to settle the estate of a woman who lived to be 94 years old. It's doubtful she ever discarded anything because it was a huge auction.

Here's a sampling of what was up for grabs ~

There must have been 20 clocks;
cuckoo, anniversary, mantle and grandfather.

Over 200 kerosene lamps of different sizes and design.
They ranged from 2" to 24".

Now, for my finds of the week:

I picked up this, one of Helen's 20 cake pedestals for $15.
Some of the cake pedestals went for well over $100.
This one has gold trim around the lip.

I also found some sweet friends for my pretty little pink table.

I couldn't resist at least one of Helen's kerosene lamps.

These plates will look pretty on the wall or on a shelf.

Here's an overview of the rest of the glassware I picked up.

This table was mine for $5. I'm going to re-do it for my bedroom.

All these handmade afghans were in a box for $3!

This sweet little clock is actually a music box that plays
As Time Goes By. $5.

I filled my car trunk and back seat for $45. I would have bought more if I had a truck with me instead of my coupe. A very nice oak microwave stand I would have loved went for $10 but I had no way of getting it home.

Be sure to come back tomorrow because I have an item I'd like your input on.

My First Auction

Saturday, I attended my first auction as a potential bidder.

Weeks ago, out of curiosity, I casually window shopped for promising treasures on our local auctioneer’s website. Suddenly, it caught my eye - a couch that would better compliment my living room than...

the borrowed earth tone one I was currently using. It looked to be in pretty good shape so I marked my calendar and made plans with my brother and sister-in-law to go.

I made sure I got to the auction early in order to look everything over before the bidding began. I looked at all the household antiques, vintage hats and hatpins, quilts, and books. I slowly made my way over to the furniture, not wanting to be disappointed by the reality of what the couch looked like. As soon as I saw it, I knew it was mine.

Allotting myself a set amount for the couch, I set off to bid on other items: winning a vintage hat and some old campaign buttons.

As the auctioneer got closer to MY couch, anticipation set in followed closely by a surge of adrenaline. Sold! Yahoo ~ $85 for a custom crafted couch that appears never to have been sat on.

I love It!

I see a lot of auctions in my future.
