Ice Cream Memories

If you haven’t figured it out yet, I love ice cream. Its cold creamy goodness satisfies my sweet tooth, but it also soothes my soul by reminding me of wonderful memories.

Memories, light the corners of my mind
Misty watercolor memories of the way we were.

Grandpa Benson
We never visited my grandpa without being offered a bowl of ice cream. If there wasn’t any in the freezer, my step grandmother would walk down to the corner to buy some. Your ice cream was always served with Vanilla Waffle Cream Cookies. I always called them ice cream cone cookies.

Mom
My mom was a notoriously slow eater. She was always the last one finished with dinner and she was always scolding us to slow down. The one exception was ice cream. She could finish a cone in record time.

As adults, we kids always joked that you never wanted Mom to fix your ice cream cone if it was melting because when you got it back, it was half gone. I wish she were here so I could tease her.

Jordan
Like his Grandma Phyllis and Great-Grandpa Benson, Jordan loves ice cream. Peach is his favorite. I will never forget his first taste of ice cream.

First, let me tell you Jordan was a very happy and mild-mannered baby. The only time he fussed is when he was hungry or had a dirty diaper.

His first taste of ice cream came when he was only about 6 months old, if that. Mom and I were at the mall with him and we got ice cream cones. I decided to let him taste it. He liked it, A LOT. He would squeal each time I took a lick and when it was gone…um TOTAL MELTDOWN! We’re talking red face, body stiffening, somebody is killing me screams. We had to walk all the way to the other end of the mall with him screeching like banshee. Although I was embarrassed at the time, now it is a sweet memory.

Do you have ice cream memories?

Blast from the Past: Carol Burnett Show

The highlight of Saturday night TV when I was growing up was the Carol Burnett Show.  Here's a fun skit featuring Harvey Korman and Tim Conway.  It was always fun to see who would crack up first.  I hope you enjoy this look back.

Tropics

Hello Friends.

Remember when ice cream was forbidden if you were trying to lose weight? Thankfully, that is no longer the case. Seriously, how long will someone stay committed to a plan that forbids ice cream consumption?

Today, we have so many options in the freezer case.

LOW SUGAR

 LOW FAT

 SUGAR AND FAT FREE

There are also many more flavor selections, including Moose Track which is one of my favorites.
Have you seen these? Edy’s has two limited edition tropical flavors for summer, Coconut Pineapple and Black Raspberry. I was so excited to hear about these two new flavors so close to my upcoming ice cream social. I was going to buy a tub of each and have a taste testing at work. At only 100 calories per ½ cup serving, I figured no one would blow their diet during the tasting.

Unfortunately, when I went on Edy’s website and searched for locations selling it, I only found it in the Dallas and San Diego areas. So, have any of you who live in the Lone Star or Golden States tried these new flavors? If so, I’d love to hear what you thought.

Homemade Ice Cream

Hello Friends.

I hope you all enjoyed a fun and festive holiday.  We made homemade ice cream this weekend.  Did you?

Homemade ice cream is as American as hot dogs, apple pie or baseball.  Nothing will cool you on a hot summer day as well as a nice bowl of homemade ice cream.  Be careful; brain freeze is a hazard of gobbling too quickly.

My recipe was given to us by an old family friend and is very yummy.  I changed the recipe a bit.  Here's my recipe, which makes 4 quarts.

Homemade Ice Cream
4 eggs
2 cups sugar (I used 1 1/2 C brown sugar and 1/2 C white)
6 cups milk
4 cups half & half (I used 1 can sweetened condense milk, 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream and the rest half & half)
2 tablespoons Vanilla

Beat eggs thoroughly, add sugar and mix together, then add the rest of the ingredients.  Pour into the chilled freezer can and freeze per manufacturer's directions.

YUMMY!

Hope to see you on the 17th!

Alphabe Thursday: L is for Luxury

It’s time once again to submit my alphabet homework to Miss Jenny. Each week, Miss Jenny assigns a letter of the alphabet and her students use their creativity to come up with novel expressions to honor the letter.

This week’s letter?

L…as in La
OK, I’m not that narcissistic….but any of you struggling with the assignment may feel free to write about how wonderful I am. Blush.

Humble as I am, I do still allow myself a luxury from time to time. When I am in Fort Pierce, that luxury is gelato from Uncle Carlo’s Gelato. Located on the waterfront in downtown Fort Pierce, Carlo offers gelato and sorbetto made fresh daily.

Unlike ice cream, gelato is lower in fat content and has less air pumped into it which makes it creamy and dense. Carlo’s fresh flavors are always changing but are all made with the highest quality fruits, nuts, and chocolate.

All I know is it is yummy for the tummy. It is always one of the highlights of my trips as we sit on the portico overlooking the Indian River and enjoy this tasty treat.

Carlo’s also serves sandwiches, salads, chocolates, and pastries. If you are in Southeastern Florida, do yourself a favor and stop in to see Carlo.

Blast from the Past: Better than the Wells Fargo Wagon

For decades children at play have turned deaf ears to their parents’ calls for dinner, bathtime or errands, but their hearing miraculously improves with the very first note of music from an ice cream truck in the distance.

Mom…

Mom…

Mom…

Mo--om!!!

The Ice Cream Man is coming!
Hurry!  I’m going to miss him…

Ahhh, memories.

Not all Good Humor men are created equal, however.
There was the Popsicle Man who served rocket popsicles, fudgesicles, push-ups, drumsticks and individual ice cream cups with those HORRIBLE WOODEN PADDLES to use as a spoon.

But the true frozen treat of the summer came from the Dairy Clipper.  Even Mom ran out to the curb when the Dairy Clipper came down the street.

Chuck (Dad’s name)…

Chuck…

Chuck…

Chu--uck!!!
The Dairy Clipper is coming!
Hurry!  We are going to miss him…
The Dairy Clipper was an ice cream shop on wheels.  It served ice cream cones, sundaes, banana splits, shakes, and malts.

THOSE WERE THE DAYS!

Do you remember running after the ice cream truck?
