Adventures in Sewing: Understanding Sewing Instructional Books

We’ve already established here I am not a natural born seamstress, but how hard could this be – right? After all, I’m a grown woman now. I am a college graduate, can read, know how to use scissors, and have this pretty new sewing machine. Let the fun begin!

Now let me see….a beginner’s manual might be a good idea in case I get stuck. My favorite fabric shop offers several guides for beginners, but which one is written at my level of sewing knowledge? Maybe it would be a good idea to borrow some guides from the library before making a purchase. Good thinking!

So far, all of these guides look like they are written in Greek. I don’t speak Greek.

But wait! There’s Sewing for Dummies on the shelf. I picked it up, flipped through it, and instantly felt like...like...what's dummer than dummies?

Remember the time you sewed your fabric to your dress? Auntie Mare’s words were ringing in my head.

Then, an aha moment…eBay! You can find anything on eBay. Sure enough, within a few short moments I purchased two guides that are written at my level of sewing knowledge.

Is 10-yr old Jamie mocking me?

This is going to be great!

  1. Hang in there! You can do it! I helped a friend once get started and her only problem was she wasn't slowing down enough to really learn the instruction manuel. Now she's sewing up things I wouldn't even dream of attempting! Good luck!

  3. OOh your machine looks very funky! I am useless at following written instructions, I am better off watching those youtube videos or having someone show me.
I think you;ll do fine and you will never regret aquiring the skills.

  4. My mother use to sew constantly for my sister and I during our childhood. She was a wizard and made it look so easy. I have a small sewing machine I am scared to touch. I have Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome from never being able to get the tension on the thread right. The top would look great. But on the bottom would be a tangled ball of threads...Good Luck! *hugs*

  5. Oh my goodness- we were separated at birth!...lol I just drug my sewing machine out of the closet again. The only sewing I do is hemming my pants & skirts since I am height deprived. I also hem my son's & husbands pants. My MIL gave me her quilting fabric and templates, which she made out of cardboard, so I think it might be fun to actually try sewing. She is 86 and can't see well enough to enjoy her hobby. I scrapbook so I'm making a page for her and memorializing her templates there. I'm looking for plastic ones...lol....Have fun & keep us up on how you're doing.

  6. La, sewing is one of those things that is easier to learn if you see it done, any chance there is any sewing classes in your area? You kind of have to think inside out and up side down, they don't teach that in college. thank you for stopping and your kind word. the weather here in Orlando is still warm, in the 90's, but it should slowly start to cool off now....slowly. Let me know if you have any time on your visit to do any antiquing.

  12. Funny post! You can do this. Just get you a seam ripper and you can undo any mistakes.Mine is used a lot.

  13. Oh yes a seam ripper is a very important part of sewing no matter how experienced you are. Make it your friend. Glad you found some books to help. I think some of the Dummies series of books are filled with information overload. Your machine is so pretty I'm sure it will inspire you. Go slow and you'll get there.
