Garden Forecast: Dismal

Hello Friends.

A couple of weeks ago, after being inspired by all you green-thumbed gardeners, I planted a vegetable and fruit garden.  I was so excited and full of anticipation as I dreamed about all the wonderful and healthy dinners I would feed my family.
I planted tomatoes, strawberries, jalapenos, cucumbers, zucchini, and squash.  Then, I bordered my garden with flowers for aesthetic purposes.
Within days, the critters in my neighborhood dug up some of the flowers.  I suspect it is those darn squirrels who were warbling at me as I was slaving over my sweet garden.

Then we were hit with a deluge of rain leaving my garden in a huge puddle of water...no need to hose them down.

After all my nurturing, I am down to tomatoes, jalapenos, and some pretty anemic looking strawberries.  The only plants that are really looking healthy are the tomatoes I have planted in a Topsy Turvy.
Next year, if I plant a garden...and that is a big IF at this point, I am planting everything in Topsy Turvies.

I have a rock garden.
Last week three of them died.

  2. I love your ending quote. I had the reputation in college as the only one who killed her air fern!

  3. La, sorry about your garden. Here in the high desert, with shale ladden soil, I don't really attempt one, although my 17 year old son would really like one -- and if a 17 year old son wants a garden, I guess we will plant a little one (it's kind of late, but oh, well). My neighbor planted one and it was destroyed by hail recently. Do you think then that the stuff that you will harvest is just the more precious? Never used a topsy turvy, but have seen them. Love the cute quote. Joni

  5. I feel your pain Sista! The only thing worse is watching a tomato grown, waiting for it to get red and when you go out to pick it you see a squirrel sitting on the fence eating it! To add insult to injury, he doesn't eat all of it, so the rest is left on the fence to rot! I was not amused! Hang in there, you'll figure it out:@)

  6. I am so sorry to hear about your garden. I have similar stories to tell...we have possums over here that eat EVERYTHING in site! I even sprayed Tabasco sauce over everything and they still attacked everything. I think you sound more determined than me so I am sure you will have success soon!

    Take care and best wishes,
    Natasha.

  7. Sorry the garden isn't working out. BTW, I think I have that same teacup thing on a stake. I think you're supposed to put seed in it?

  8. Oh my gosh, your garden was gorgeous!! But, at least some little angel critters got fed!!! (We had a precious wild bunny one year that ate ours.)
Thank goodness for your topsy turvy!

We did the topsy turvy thing a couple summers ago..pretty fair luck with them but nothing like they show on tv. :))
Sorry your garden didn't work out ...just hang in there, tho.
